Racist Note from McDonalds?
Well, by now, most of us have seen this crazy TwitPic that made us all do a double-take. What!? Is McDonald’s really telling it’s employees to charge customers additional fees for being black!? Something about this image just seemed a little strange though, and while it could very well have been authentic (yes, corporations aren’t much smarter than the average guy), you’ll be relieved to discover that it’s a fake. To verify, just call the 800 number at the bottom of the notice. Surprisingly, it will connect you to the KFC customer service hotline. Even more to the point though, McDonald’s flat out denies that they have anything to do with this image and I’m inclined to believe them.
In my experience, McDonald’s is one of the only corporations that promotes women, people with disabilities and people of color with any regularity. I wouldn’t put it past a few of the managers I’ve seen, but for McDonald’s overall, this seems a bit out there. According to several sources, this same image circulated the web last year and was proved a hoax, so it’s not new. I guess it just goes to show that you have to check your facts before you buy into every story on the web. Bravo to everyone who’s trying to make their voice heard on topics like this though…social media has power! There’s nothing better than taking action against these types of issues, but a word of caution…double check it first. ;)
UPDATE: (06/14/2011)
Wow…I think I have a pretty good theory about who’s pushing the racist McDonald’s image. Have you seen the “Racist McDonald’s Commercial” on YouTube? I won’t post it here because it’s very offensive, but it’s interesting how they mention the words #SeriouslyMcDonalds at the end. What do you think? Hint: look for channel “THEOFFICIALNCAA”

Wow glad I don’t eat there ever!!! I can not believe that who said the robberies were conducted by African-Americans? White people rob too. That seems very racist to me :(
Oh yes…the message is extremely racist. I have no idea who’s responsible, but it looks like they’re not affiliated with McDonald’s. If you dial the number in the image, it directs you to a KFC hotline. It’s pretty upsetting though and it would be nice to find out who’s circulating it so they can be held accountable.
I read about this on Yahoo News. Sad that someone goes this far to smear a company. I read the comments to that article and many people were saying the only color McDonald’s cares about is green (money) so it seems not a ton of people believe this hoax.
Yeah, I see what you mean. There are a lot of people who see it as real. In my update of this post, I found some interesting details that could point to the origin of this hoax. It’s sad and disgusting that people are even spending their time this way.
This is just too much. ¿Qué tiene la gente? If these people took the same amount to do something positive instead of hateful, they’d help change the world into a better place. Very true what you say about investigating everything. I’m slow to react to negative news reports for that reason. Somebody’s usually got an agenda. Buena lección aquí.
Right! Good point! I wish people would put this much effort into something positive. ♥
I think this is a fake. I dialled the 800 number on the notice, and it is the KFC corporate number.
