Breaking Down White Ignorance Through Comedy

For a while, the “Sh*t people say” videos have been trending, but the real shining stars of all these webisodes have been the videos that both poke fun at and bring awareness to the realities of racism.

While some of these videos aren’t much more than heavy satire, there are a rising number of those that provide a useful critique of white ignorance.  That’s not to say that all white people are ignorant and unaware, but there is definitely a trend among whites as a result of segregation…and you can’t deny that there are knowledge gaps in need of some serious bridging.

I’m really glad to see videos and discussions about this topic coming to light and I hope the speaking out continues.  For those who claim the videos are racist, I will admit I’ve seen some generalizations that cross the line, but that doesn’t mean that all videos on this topic should be discounted.  There’s a popular misconception that talking about race is “racist,” but I have to say, it’s far more racist to IGNORE race.

For the videos below, all of which I think are helpful discussions, I don’t believe that the point was to mock whites, but instead to voice frustrations about the very real misconceptions that people of color face every day.  Honestly, there’s a lot more that could be said than any of these videos have addressed and I hope they keep coming and bringing awareness to a topic that receives far too little attention.

For whites, I think we should count ourselves lucky that there are individuals out there who aren’t afraid to call us on our ignorance and even some who are willing to help us learn from it.  Consider it a lesson.

  1. Hilarious! I hadn’t seen these yet. For me, I get, “Oh, you must be really good at cooking Chinese food.” Um, not really…I wish!

    • @Maria Adcock LOL! Right! I heard someone on a Latino news site this year say that white people only eat boiled hot dogs and white bread…LOL. I laugh because I remember those boiled hot dogs when I was a kids and how much I hated them. Funny to find out that’s a “white thing”…ROFL!!
